Robert Burns and Kilmarnock’s Literary Heritage

This January and February we are celebrating not only Robert Burns, but also the less well-known literary heritage of Kilmarnock. Our display Robert Burns and Kilmarnock’s Literary Heritage features highlights from our collections, relating to Burns, Kilmarnock’s printers and booksellers, and some of the lesser known poets and writers from the town.

Silverwood Primary School’s P7 class will create the display, having learned lots about the town’s literature from the past two centuries. The class will delve into rarely seen periodicals, poetry pamphlets, books, photographs and advertisements. They will work in 3 teams: Curator Team, Collections Team, and Display Team. The display will be complete next week – when the space below will be filled with colourful and informative images from Kilmarnock’s literary past!

We will blog during January and February with some of the highlights from the display. And of course, the display is open to the public Tuesday to Saturday. With Silverwood P7′s help, we’ll hopefully inform lots of people about Kilmarnock’s important literary heritage and the rich collections it has produced.

Great initiative! This is the kind of thing that is more important in educational terms than most people realise.

Thanks for the supportive comments! Display is now complete. Hopefully we’ll get the class to come back to meet the Glasgow University placements next month.

My Primary 6 pupils are working on a study of The Life of Burns and this might prove intersting for them. A great way to share your hard work!
